Paul Westfield

Paul Westfield has a passion for excellence and safety, built and honed by over 45 years of experience. That passion led him to co-found Medical Safety Action Systems. Trained as a Physician Development Coach in 2015, Paul has been working to integrate his expertise in aviation error management in ways to benefit patient safety. Gaining certification in Emotional Intelligence coaching and evaluating helped guide the direction of his work. Harvard’s “Non-Technical Skills for OR Teams: Intensive Master Class opened his eyes to a gap in the way medical errors are identified and managed. Years of experience as an Airline Captain/Instructor, training aviation instructors in observation and error causality debrief skills, provided the foundation for integration into medicine. His volunteer work as the National Airline Pilots Association’s Aeromedical Subject Matter Expert was instrumental in developing their mental health peer to peer program. Paul is a former USAF A-10 Fighter Pilot steeped in high pressure, high performance decision making. His work in understanding the neurocognitive influences of fatigue on performance was highlighted in his presentation and published paper at the 2024 ICCAS Conference on Cognitive Aircraft  Systems in Toulouse, FR.  He understands the leadership, organizational, and cultural challenges healthcare organizations face in reducing medical error. More importantly, he is uniquely qualified to understand the drive and passion of todays physicians and help them maximize their team’s effectiveness and success.
